If your course includes a requirement to add a new discussion to a forum, the steps are simple.

From the course home screen, click the forum to open it. On that screen, click the Add a New Discussion Topic button. This opens a form to be filled out.

Give your discussion a title and fill in some information in the main text field. Subscribe to comments by clicking the checkbox. That way, you will not miss it if someone replies to your post!

If you need to attach a file, do it in the field below. Finish by clicking Post to Forum.

If you think of something you need to change about your post, it's not permanent. Click your title to reopen the discussion. Look on the right side of your screen and click Edit or Delete to make changes you think are necessary.
